An airship designed at Cardington took to the skies over Bedfordshire this week before heading out on a journey to the Middle East.

For years, the history books have always said that "The last flight of a U.S. Navy airship occurred on August 31, 1962." That apparently will now have to be re-stated, because a new era is about to occur.

Test flights are scheduled for this week, followed by some form of "official" announcement. As details are fed to me, I will pass on what I can.

At a cost of $3.5 million, the American Blimp Corp. A-170 airship contract is small potatoes in the world of military aviation. But it's already generating a buzz in the lighter-than-air community, after the plain white airship made its first flights in recent days.

        Airship swoop on Moscow criminals

Russian police are to tackle Moscow's crime and traffic problems from airships.

Yuri Luzhkov, the mayor, has ordered the purchase of two gas airships and three balloons to help authorities track fugitive criminals, monitor traffic flows and thwart terrorist threats.

Russian-made Au12 airships and Au27 tethered balloons, known as aerostats, will soon be gliding into place over the busiest roads and most dangerous districts of the capital as part of a £1.4 million project to ease the city's problems from the air.

(Clacton, U.K./Tyres & Accessories) With a record total of 418 hours of Olympic television coverage, NBC will use The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. to provide aerial coverage for U.S. television of the Winter Olympics from Torino, Italy.

Goodyear, which provided the first aerial coverage of a televised sporting event at the 1960 Orange Bowl, has contributed spectacular images from above thousands of major sporting events for almost 50 years.

“NBC is putting particular emphasis on its high-tech coverage,” said NBC Sports executive producer David Neal. “Only Goodyear has the means and the skill to be able to provide the type of first-class aerial footage we needed to enhance our more than 24 hours of combined coverage everyday and bring our viewers an amazing overhead perspective.”

Goodyear has a longstanding history of working with NBC to provide best-of-class aerial broadcast coverage. Over the years, the two have collaborated on coverage of the National Football League and Major League Baseball as well as the Olympics, Kentucky Derby, the Rose Parade and even the 2004 Presidential election.

As part of NBC's deal with Goodyear, viewers will see prominent onscreen animated graphics that Goodyear will use to deliver product messages to its audience. More than traditional onscreen credits, the eye-catching animation will feature the world-famous Goodyear Blimp and messages highlighting Goodyear's TripleTred and SilentArmor technology for tires.

“This is an excellent opportunity for us to deliver product and technology messages to an enormous audience,” said Joey Viselli, director of marketing services at Goodyear. “For Goodyear, it’s about making the most of our aerial assets to increase specific product visibility.”

Goodyear says that this creative partnership with NBC represents another example of the innovative ways that the company has begun to leverage its aerial assets, and is yet another example of how the company continues to evolve from a manufacturing-driven company to an innovative, fast-moving consumer products company.

Lockheed Martin's Secretly Built Airship Makes First Flight

Lockheed Martin Advanced Development Projects is making perhaps the first realistic tests of a hybrid airship--a concept that dates back many decades but that is just now being tried at a significant scale.

The Skunk Works made the first flight of its "P-791" testbed on Jan. 31 at its facility on the Palmdale Air Force Plant 42 airport. The manned flight was about a 5-min. circuit around the airport in the morning and appeared to be successful. The company did not announce or want to discuss the flight. >>> more

Dynalifter, le prototype d'un engin volant hybride est actuellement en développement et prêt à être testé en vol dans l'Ohio. Selon ses concepteurs, la "maquette", d'une longueur de 35 mètres, équipée de deux sièges est le premier d'une série d'aéronefs qui pourraient ouvrir une ère nouvelle dans le domaine du transport aérien.

L'engin, bien que différent d'un dirigeable souple, peut être équipé de deux petits moteurs et être rempli de 470 mètres cubes d'hélium. Selon Robert Rist, co-fondateur de la société Ohio Airships, Dynalifter est un avion hybride dont la seule ressemblance avec un dirigeable est qu'ils utilisent tous les deux de l'hélium.

Contrairement au dirigeable, l'aéronef possède des ailes, et sa masse est soulevée grâce à la portance des ailes et la coque, augmentée par la portance de d'hélium. Le prototype est un modèle réduit au huitième de l'engin que Rist et son associé, Brian Martin, espèrent pouvoir tester en vol ce printemps: le Dynalifter de 300 mètres de long.

Airship market balloons

After building a business defending high-ranking officials in Iraq, Blackwater USA executives think the future may be hovering above the battlefield.

The North Carolina company is developing an airship — think Goodyear blimp — loaded with sensors and surveillance cameras that can quickly relay information about the ground below to clients miles away.

Russian Immigrant Makes “Outstanding Proposal” in US Military Blimp Program

A group of Russian emigres running a California firm is facing U.S. giant Lockheed Martin in the race for Pentagon contract to build an airship for troop transportation.

The company run by Russian emigres is called Worldwide Aeros, employs 40 workers and makes blimps used for flying billboards. Lockheed Martin’s sales in 2004 amounted to $35.5 billion and nearly 80 percent of its business is with the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Civil Government/Homeland Security. Both companies have won $3 million in contracts from the Pentagon to do preliminary design work, the Los Angeles Times said on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

In September the Pentagon will award one of the a $100 million contract to build a 900-foot airship prototype. Eventually, the Pentagon could spend as much as $11 bilion on a fleet of these vessels. >>> more
